How Much Does SEO Cost? An Honest Breakdown

By Published On: November 3, 2026

You’ve asked three agencies for an SEO quote. One says £150 a month. One says £1,500. One says “it depends” and books a call. Helpful.

The short answer: SEO in the UK can cost anything from a small one-off fee to thousands a month. That’s because “SEO” covers very different amounts of work. The useful question isn’t “what’s the price?” It’s “what work do I get, and is it what my business needs?” Here’s how to tell.

How much does SEO cost in the UK?

There’s no single price for SEO. What you pay depends on how much work is done each month, who does it and what your business needs.

Think of it like asking “how much does a builder cost?” A new kitchen and a garden wall are both building work. Nobody would expect the same quote.

So when you compare SEO prices, compare the work, not just the number at the bottom.

How do SEO agencies charge?

Most SEO is sold in one of four ways. Each suits a different situation.

  • Monthly packages: a set amount of work every month, usually on a rolling or fixed contract. This is the most common model for ongoing SEO.
  • Hourly rate: you pay for the time spent. Useful for small, specific jobs.
  • One-off projects: a fixed price for a defined job, like an SEO audit, a website migration or setting up your Google Business Profile.
  • Audits and consultations: someone reviews your site and tells you what to do, and you do the work yourself.

Watch out for packages that don’t say what’s included. “Monthly SEO” with no detail could mean twenty hours of real work or twenty minutes of report-sending.

How does BW Digital charge?

We work on a monthly basis, quoted for what your website actually needs. Before we quote, we look at your site, your competitors and your goals, so you’re only paying for work that makes sense.

However big or small the package, the terms are the same. It’s rolling monthly with 30 days’ notice. There’s no long contract, and you own everything we create or set up.

What do you actually get for your money?

A good SEO package should spell out the work. Depending on your business, the hours might go on:

  • an audit to find what’s holding your site back
  • technical fixes, like speed, broken pages and indexing problems
  • improving your key service pages
  • writing or updating content that answers customer questions
  • your Google Business Profile and local visibility
  • earning quality links and mentions
  • a monthly report in plain English: what we did, what changed, what’s next

With us, the monthly hours go on whatever SEO your website needs most that month. That might be the website itself, new articles, technical fixes, local SEO or something else. We decide based on what we see, and we tell you why.

What makes SEO cost more (or less)?

The price usually rises with the amount of work needed to make a difference. The big factors are:

  • Competition: a national insurance broker needs far more work than a local dog groomer.
  • Your area: targeting one town is smaller than targeting the whole UK.
  • Your website’s condition: a slow, messy site needs fixing before anything else works.
  • Size: a 10-page site and a 1,000-product shop are very different jobs.
  • Content: if you need lots of new pages written, that takes time.
  • Your goals: “more calls from Leeds” is a smaller job than “beat national brands”.

Is cheap SEO worth it?

Usually not. Very cheap SEO often means very little work, or the wrong kind.

Watch out for:

  • guaranteed rankings (nobody controls Google)
  • “hundreds of backlinks” for a tiny price
  • automated content churned out by the dozen
  • reports full of numbers, with no explanation
  • long contracts you can’t leave

Some of these don’t just waste money. Spammy links can actively harm your website, and then you pay twice: once for the damage and again to fix it.

Affordable SEO is different. It means focused work on the things that matter most, at a price you can keep up.

How much should a small business spend on SEO?

Spend what lets you do the most important work steadily, month after month. For many small businesses, that means starting small and focused rather than buying the biggest package.

A useful sum: what’s one new customer worth to you? If one extra job a month would cover the cost, SEO is easier to justify.

How to compare SEO quotes

Put every quote side by side and ask the same questions:

  • How many hours of work do I get each month?
  • What exactly will you work on first, and why?
  • How will you report progress, in plain English?
  • How long is the contract, and what’s the notice period?
  • Who owns the website, content and accounts if I leave?
  • Do you guarantee rankings? (The right answer is no.)

The cheapest quote isn’t always the best value. Neither is the most expensive. The best one is the quote that explains the work clearly and fits your goals.

FAQs

How much does SEO cost per month in the UK?

It varies widely, depending on how much work is included. Always compare what each quote covers, not just the monthly figure.

Can I pay for SEO as a one-off?

Yes, for defined jobs like an audit, technical fixes or setting up a Google Business Profile. Ongoing visibility usually needs regular work, though.

Why do SEO prices vary so much?

Because providers include very different amounts and types of work. Always ask what’s included before comparing prices.

Is SEO cheaper than Google Ads?

It can be over time, because you don’t pay per click. Ads bring faster results while you pay, so many businesses use both.

How long until I see results?

There’s no fixed timeline. Some fixes help within weeks, while competitive searches usually take months of steady work.
