AIO vs GEO vs AEO: Six AI search acronyms explained side by side AIO GEO AEO AI SEO AISO and LLMO

Learn the difference between AIO vs GEO vs AEO

By Published On: November 3, 2026

Someone tells you your business needs GEO. Someone else says AEO. A third person is selling AIO. You nod politely and wonder if they’re talking about SEO or a vitamin supplement.

The short answer: AIO, GEO, AEO, AI SEO, AISO and LLMO are different names for roughly the same thing. They all mean getting your business found in AI answers, like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews. The names differ. The work is mostly the same. Here’s what each one means, and whether you need any of it.

What do AIO, GEO and AEO stand for?

They’re all labels for making your business easier for AI search tools to find, understand and mention. Six names for one idea. The SEO industry does love an acronym.

Name Stands for In plain English
AIO AI search optimisation Getting found in AI answers. It’s what we call it at BW Digital.
GEO Generative engine optimisation Getting cited by tools that write answers, like ChatGPT.
AEO Answer engine optimisation Being the direct answer to someone’s question.
AI SEO AI search engine optimisation Same goal. Careful: some people use it to mean using AI to do SEO.
AISO AI search optimisation Another spelling of AIO.
LLMO Large language model optimisation Named after the technology behind AI assistants.

What is AIO in digital marketing?

AIO usually means AI search optimisation: making your business easy for AI tools to understand and recommend. You’ll sometimes see it written as “AI optimisation”.

It covers the big AI assistants, like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Microsoft Copilot. It also covers the AI answers at the top of Google.

What is GEO in SEO?

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. “Generative” means the tool writes (generates) an answer, rather than just listing links.

So GEO is about getting your business mentioned or cited in those written answers. It’s the most popular name in the industry right now, which is why you’ll hear it a lot.

(No, it has nothing to do with geography. Although for local businesses, location does still matter.)

What is AEO?

AEO stands for answer engine optimisation. It’s about shaping your content so a search tool can lift it as a direct answer.

AEO has been around longer than the others. It started with Google’s featured snippets and voice assistants, and now applies to AI answers too.

In practice, it means clear questions as headings, with a short, direct answer straight underneath. Like this post.

What about AI SEO, AISO and LLMO?

AI SEO is the trickiest, because it has two meanings. Some agencies use it to mean getting found in AI answers. Others use it to mean using AI tools to do SEO work faster. Always ask which one you’re being sold.

AISO is simply another way of writing AI search optimisation.

LLMO means large language model optimisation. A large language model (LLM) is the technology that powers AI assistants. It’s the most technical-sounding name, but the work is the same.

We explain the whole idea in more depth in What Is AI SEO?

So what’s actually the difference between them?

Very little, in practice. Each name puts the spotlight on a slightly different angle, but the work underneath is largely the same.

  • AEO leans towards short, direct answers.
  • GEO leans towards being cited in longer AI-written answers.
  • AIO, AISO, AI SEO and LLMO are broader umbrella names.

If two agencies offer you “GEO” and “AIO”, they’re very likely offering the same kind of work with different labels. Compare what they’ll actually do, not what they call it.

GEO vs SEO: is it different from normal SEO?

It builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Google says its usual SEO best practices still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode.

The foundations are the same: a website search engines can reach, clear pages, useful content and a good reputation online.

What AI search adds is a stronger focus on clarity and consistency. AI tools piece together a picture of your business from many places, so your details and services need to match everywhere.

Think of SEO as building the house, and AIO as making sure the address is on every map.

What does the work actually involve?

Whatever it’s called, good AI search work usually includes:

  • checking AI tools are allowed to read your website
  • making sure your services, location and expertise are crystal clear
  • keeping your business details consistent across the web
  • writing answer-first content around real customer questions
  • adding structured data (labels that tell search engines what’s on a page)
  • getting listed where AI tools look, like Google, Bing and Apple
  • checking each month whether AI tools mention you, and who they mention instead

Nobody can promise you’ll appear in AI answers. AI platforms decide what to show. A good provider improves your chances and reports honestly on what changes.

Do you need AIO, GEO or AEO?

If your customers use AI tools to find businesses like yours, it’s worth paying attention. For most small businesses, it starts with strong SEO foundations and clear information, which help with both.

You probably don’t need a big, separate AI campaign straight away. A good first step is to check how AI tools currently describe your business, and fix anything that’s unclear or wrong.

Try it now. Ask ChatGPT or Gemini: “Who are the best [your service] businesses in [your town]?” Then see who comes up.
